Folklore and myths about Dragons spread across all cultures worldwide. No wonder it has inspired a diverse set of enchanting films all over the world.  Dragons have a varied set of powers from throwing fireballs to being repositories of ancient world wisdom. These flying creatures, sometimes even causing war are indispensable to the genre of fantasy. These movies are bound to be perfect for the little ones to get away with on a fantasy journey. And the compelling stories and the sweet dragons will also keep the parents charmed!  

Luck (2022)

This animated film directed by Peggy Holmes is a kids’ favorite. It’s very Les Misérables in its trope of misfortunate orphans, but that is until our Protagonist Sam starts eating paninis and talking with cats. This cat leads her to the land of Luck which is filled with all fairytale creatures from Dragon, Leprechauns, and unicorns. 

Monster Hunter (2020)

Paul W.S. Anderson is a master of fantasy and bases his movie on a very popular video game franchise. This movie is set in a parallel dystopian world (New World) where humans are preyed upon by scary marine creatures. A U.S. soldier on earth captain Artemis is called in to extract personnel from the desert and gets drawn through a portal into this new world.  With venomous spiders and dragon creatures, this flick is worth a watch.

Raya and The Last Dragon (2021)

This animated Disney film directed by Don Hall was one of the best 2021 films, including an academy awards nomination. The land of the Kumandra was terrorized by the Druun who are giant purple cloud-like spirits that can turn things to stone. A dragon called Sisu, who is the last of the existing ones traps the Druun in a gem. Now, five hundred years later the gem is broken accidentally releasing the Druun. Raya a young warrior princess tries to reconcile her land and their protective gem.

Wish Dragon (2021)

Cast: Jackie Chan, Jimmy Wong, Constance Wu, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Jimmy O. Yang

Produced by Jackie Chan and starring Jimmy O. Yang it is one of the wittiest dragon movies. This film is about a little girl called Din who receives a teapot which holds a genie dragon in it called Long. The genie dragon will only grant her three wishes and she has to choose carefully. Mr.Wang who had given her the pot now wants it back and the teapot will grant wishes to only the one who is in possession of it. 

Pete’s Dragon (2016)

Cast: Oakes Fegley, Robert Redford, Bryce Dallas Howard, Mickey Rooney

IMDb Rating: 6.7 /10

Directed by David Lowery, is modeled after Spielberg’s The BFG, but with a dragon it. Based on a musical, Pete is a little boy who loses his parents to an accident. He is then raised by a dragon who can become invisible on command. He names his dragon Elliot. 

How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

Cast: Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, Kristen Wiig

Hiccup is a curious little inventor living in the Viking village called Berk, but his inventions are often a failure. His village is repeatedly antagonized by dragons and Hiccup is hell-bent to solve it. Although his invention, a bolas designed to kill dragons successfully injures one: he can’t kill it. Instead, he devotes time to grooming the dragons and befriends Night Fury the dragon while he is in a class to learn how to destroy them. With his little crush Astrid, who is in the same class this bright, children’s movie is highly recommended. 

Shrek (2001)

Cast: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Chris Miller, Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow.

Directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson,: Shrek, an ogre values his seclusion and privacy more than anything. Then there is the villain.  Lord Farquaad is desperate to marry princess Fiona. Shrek’s solitude is infringed upon when Lord Farquaad banishes Unicorn Alice and others. Although Shrek tries to convince the lord of Duloc to assign them a different habitat, he fails. That is until Farquuad realizes Shrek’s strength and orders him to rescue princess Fiona, whose fortress is protected by a dragon. Shrek befriends and the dragon becomes very instrumental to the plot and the sweet little ending. Shrek is joined by his friend Donkey who the children are bound to love! 

Enchanted (2007)

Cast: James Marsden, Susan Sarandon, Amy Adams, Kevin Lima.

This movie directed by Kevin Lima is set in both modern-day New York and the fantastical kingdom of Andalasia. This Disney film with, princes, princesses, and Chipmunks will be a hit with kids. 

The premise revolves around Prince Edward who falls in love with Giselle. Giselle has also desired to marry a prince so they decide to elope the next morning. Except, Edward is unaware that Narissa his evil sorceress mother, will lose her kingdom of Andalasia if Edward marries. So Narissa’s scheme lands Giselle in modern-day New York where she is sheltered by Robert. Then this whirlwind of romance is disrupted by Narissa, who can also transform into a dragon.

Tom and Jerry: The Lost Dragon (2014)

Cast: Spike Brandt, Kelly Stables, Wayne Knight, Vicki Lewis. 

IMDb Rating: 5.8/10

The film opens in a village where Drizelda is being banished for misbehaving. Drizela is a sorceress. Her niece, despite the villager’s suspicion, is spared and allowed to stay. People still remain weary of her, as she likes cats and has a vermin (Jerry). Dashed with sequences of classic Tom and Jerry frenemy scenes, the movie already has the elements to become a kid’s favorite. Additionally, there is a dragon egg that Athena, Tom, and Jerry start rearing. But things start to go out of control when Drizelda decides to make a return and steal the dragon. 

My Little Pony: The Movie

Cast: Emily Blunt, Cathy Weseluck, Sia Furler, Zoe Saldaña.

My Little Pony: The Movie is the equivalent of a sugar rush for the little ones; with ponies, unicorns, seahorses, and dragons it is perfect. The movie is an adaptation of the popular show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

With references to pop culture like Pretty Woman, it serves the adult taste too. The kingdom of Equestria is ruled by Princess Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, and Spike the Dragon. Since these little ponies are all about kindness and friendship, they are celebrating it; but things start to go wrong for the princess and her cute little friends when Storm King a sorcerer tries to steal the princess to increase his powers.  

The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep

Cast: Alex Etel, Ben Chaplin, Emily Watson, David Morrissey

Directed by Jay Russell, this movie is premised upon a little, solitary boy. Angus lives with his mom and sister in a manor house. His father who is a sailor in the navy has been missing for over a year. All is okay till Angus finds the egg of a water horse.
