From Star Wars Dream to Sci-Fi Sensation: The Evolution of Rebel Moon
A Sci-Fi Epic Born from Ambition
Zack Snyder, the visionary director renowned for his ambitious projects, embarks on an exciting new sci-fi saga called Rebel Moon. Initially conceived as a Star Wars pitch, this one has evolved into a multi-part epic that delves into a vast and immersive universe. Snyder’s unparalleled ability to craft expansive worlds and envision potential expansions has led to the creation of a comprehensive 450-page ‘bible’, brimming with intricate lore and captivating backstories.
Netflix’s Fascination and the Boundless Potential of Rebel Moon
Netflix, the platform that eagerly acquired the project, was captivated by the scale and potential of the movie. They asked Snyder how big the project could be and how many movies it could span. This prompted Snyder to delve even deeper into the universe he was building.
The current plan is for two movies, each with additional cuts that cater to both family-friendly and harder-edged versions. However, Snyder has much more in mind. He envisions a TV series that explores the history of the saga’s main antagonist, portrayed by Fra Fee. Moreover, a proposed third film will transport audiences to the enigmatic rebel moon, Vanna.
The saga of Rebel Moon can be seen on Netflix arriving on December 22, 2023.
“What if I give you two movies?”- Zack Snyder
Rebel Moon promises to be an expansive story set across multiple planets, spaceships, and moons. Snyder’s creative vision combines various cinematic influences and his own unique signature style. Producer Deborah Snyder describes the film as an accumulation of everything Zack has done so far, emphasizing the meticulous attention to production design, languages, and characters.
Zack Snyder’s wife and longtime producing partner, Deborah Snyder says, “Originally, the script was one movie, but it was in ‘Zack form’. It was 172 pages.” So Rebel Moon was shaping up to be approximately three hours long which did not impress Netflix film chairman Scott Stuber.
Similar to his previous works like the DC ‘Snyder-verse’, the movie aims to establish a universe with extensive world-building and imaginative action sequences.
Origins and Creative Freedom
Interestingly, Rebel Moon began as a Star Wars concept, envisioned by Snyder as a tribute to the classic film Seven Samurai. However, due to the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney, the idea never materialized within the Star Wars universe.
Snyder wanted creative freedom and didn’t want to work with established characters, leading him to develop Rebel Moon as an original story. Initially, he envisioned an R-rated film, but the idea faced obstacles within the Star Wars framework.
He says “Frankly what I’m really interested in with ‘Rebel Moon’ is creating a romantic sci-fi film on a scale that is, frankly, as big as you can make a movie. I’ve never done a science-fiction film at this scale.” Now, a decade later, Snyder has the opportunity to bring his original vision to life with complete control.
