Walpurgis Night is the night when it is believed that witches hold a large party and await the arrival of Spring. It is said that the witches meet on Harz Mountains in Germany on the night of April 30th, and a festival is held every year on that date to celebrate this meeting.
Walpurgis Night is a time when people dress up as witches and devils, and dance around a bonfire wearing scary masks. Just before midnight, a dummy of a witch, symbolizing winter, is burned in the bonfire. As the clock strikes twelve, a lovely girl dressed as the May Queen appears. She is the symbol of Spring, and all that is good and pure. With her appearance, the devils and witches disappear till the next year, and winter gives way to Spring.
